A selection of magazines, books, newspapers, and printed publications featuring the work of Yong-Ki Chang through EQUAL DIST, THE SOLITARY ARTS, TOGETHER TOGETHER, SPECIAL CRUD, exhibitions, collaborative projects, and independent cultural initiatives.

 

CONTRAST Issue 11 (2014) featured an editorial on artist Todd Francis, documenting a selection of Francis' skateboard graphics and artwork. The feature grew from a decade-long creative partnership that included SPECIAL CRUD, exhibitions, publications, artist management, and collaborative projects.This issue also included a complimentary ad, illustrated by Jef Hartsel (right page) for THE SOLITARY ARTS.LODOWN Magazine No. 84 (2013) showcased Yong-Ki as part of Black Is Beautiful, a special editorial curated by artist Allister Lee. The black-and-white feature offered a behind-the-scenes look at THE SOLITARY ARTS and EQUAL DIST studio by SFO, showcasing products and artwork, alongside photographs by Isaac McKay-Randozzi of team riders, Jef Hartsel and Bob Lake.

SLIDER Japan Vol. 09 (2011) featured a multi-page editorial on THE SOLITARY ARTS, including dedicated features on Geoff McFetridge and Yong-Ki Chang, alongside original illustrations, product releases, and selected works from the archive/studio. 

CONTRAST Issue No. 05 (2011) featured "THE CALIFORNIA SOLITARY TIMES, Vol. 2", a special publication developed by Yong-Ki Chang and Geoff McFetridge for THE SOLITARY ARTS. Invited by CONTRAST Magazine to curate and produce the cover, the issue-within-an-issue, the project combined original artwork, photography, interviews, product development, skateboarding, and editorial content into a standalone newspaper-format publication distributed as part of the magazine.

Highlights included an interview between Geoff McFetridge and Yong-Ki. The SOLITARY TIMES was a documentation of the people, ideas, and culture surrounding the project during this period.

COLOR Magazine Vol. 9 No. 6 Special Edition, "There Is No Skateboarding, Only Skateboarders: Rolling With Solitary Arts," (2011) is a multi-page editorial by Isaac McKay-Randozzi documenting THE SOLITARY ARTS' California road trip with Bob Lake, Jef Hartsel and Yong-Ki surrounding A Product Of Design installation in Culver City, skate sessions with legend Jay Adams, and the installation of Geoff McFetridge's 9-foot SOLITARY ARTS, "Curb Thief" sculpture for opening night.

HUCK Magazine, Issue 30 (2011) featured Solitary Moments, a multi-page editorial on THE SOLITARY ARTS written by Andrew Kunard and photographed by Isaac McKay-Randozzi. The feature followed friends through a road trip spanning skateboarding, exhibitions, and collaborative projects, including A Product of Design and a session with Jay Adams. Directed by Yong-Ki during a period when the THE SOLITARY ARTS increasingly moved beyond traditional skateboard company boundaries and into exhibitions, publishing, and collaborative cultural work.

Scion Presents: A Product Of Design (2011) was a group exhibition presented by Scion Installation LA and curated by Gluekit. The exhibition featured THE SOLITARY ARTS alongside Best Made Company, The Quiet Life, Colophon Foundry, Hugo & Marie, Ben Blanc Studio, JB Lab, and other independent design-driven projects.

Representing THE SOLITARY ARTS, Yong-Ki collaborated with McFetridge to develop exhibition graphics, original art, products, and installations exploring the intersection of skateboarding, art, publishing, and product design. The exhibition reflected Chang's ongoing work building THE SOLITARY ARTS as a platform for independent culture, handmade production, creative collaboration, and community-driven projects.

STICKERS: From Punk Rock to Contemporary Art Book (2010) featured sticker designs and graphics by Geoff McFetridge, including work created for Champion Graphics and THE SOLITARY ARTS.

THE CALIFORNIA SOLITARY TIMES, Vol. 1 (Summer 2009) was an independently produced newspaper created by Geoff McFetridge and Yong-Ki Chang for THE SOLITARY ARTS. Combining original artwork, photography, essays, product releases, manufacturing stories, and a collectible double-sided Geoff McFetridge poster, the publication, a brand manifesto, a catalog, newspaper, and art project.

While each copy carried a $2 cover price, the publication was distributed to skate shops with no expectation that it be sold. Instead, retailers were encouraged to gift copies to customers/skateboarders. The result was a publication that reflected THE SOLITARY ARTS' broader interest in creativity, community, storytelling, and independent distribution beyond traditional marketing. ...and it was fun!

VANS OFF THE WALL: STORIES OF SOLE FROM VANS ORIGINALS Book (2009) featured a photograph by Yong-Ki Chang of Greg "PNUT" Galinsky in the shaping room of legendary surfboard shaper William "Stretch" Riedel. The image appears alongside a profile celebrating PNUT's contribution to the Vans Artist Series.

VANS Vault's "All Around Us" Greg "PNUT" Galinsky Booklet (2006) featured photographs by Yong-Ki Chang documenting Greg "PNUT" Galinsky at Coachella 2006 and Stretch's shaping room. Both projects were produced in collaboration with VANS.
